About AJK Electricity Department

The AJK Electricity Department (AJKED) is a state-owned government department responsible for the development, operation, maintenance, transmission, and distribution of electricity across Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK). The department operates under the Azad Government of Jammu & Kashmir Rules of Business 1985 (Revised 2021) and works to provide reliable electricity services to communities throughout the region.

History of Electricity in Azad Jammu & Kashmir

The history of electricity in Azad Jammu & Kashmir can broadly be divided into two major periods: pre-1974 and post-1974. Before 1974, electricity services were available only in limited areas, mainly in parts of Muzaffarabad and Mirpur, while large areas of AJK remained without access to electricity.

Since 1983, the AJK Electricity Department has made significant progress in expanding electricity infrastructure across the region. Through the development and extension of power networks, electricity services have reached nearly 96% of the population of Azad Kashmir, supporting the social and economic development of communities across AJK.

Role and Responsibilities

AJKED is responsible for the construction, operation, maintenance, transmission, and distribution of electricity networks throughout Azad Jammu & Kashmir. The department works to maintain and improve the power infrastructure required to provide dependable electricity services to residential, commercial, and other consumers.

Electricity is essential to the development of homes, businesses, education, healthcare, tourism, agriculture, communication, and modern technology. AJKED continues to strengthen electricity infrastructure and improve services to support sustainable development throughout Azad Jammu & Kashmir.
