About AJK Electricity Department

The history of electricity in Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK) is divided into two major eras: pre-1974 and post-1974. Before 1974, electricity services were limited to a few areas of Muzaffarabad and Mirpur, while most parts of AJK had no access to power. Since 1983, the AJK Electricity Department (AJKED) has significantly expanded electricity infrastructure, bringing reliable electricity services to nearly 96% of the population across Azad Kashmir.

AJK Electricity Department (AJKED) is a state-owned government department operating under the Azad Government of Jammu & Kashmir Rules of Business 1985 (Revised 2021). AJKED is responsible for the construction, operation, maintenance, transmission, and distribution of electricity networks throughout AJK.

Today, electricity plays a vital role in powering homes, businesses, education, healthcare, tourism, communication, agriculture, and modern technologies across the region. AJKED continues to improve electricity services and strengthen power infrastructure to support development in Azad Jammu & Kashmir.

Currently, AJKED operates under the Energy & Water Resources Department of the Government of AJK and includes the following divisions:

Chief Engineer Muzaffarabad
Chief Engineer Mirpur
